Documenting your Cherokee heritage involves two steps:

  1. Build a family tree based on your heritage.
  2. Search the public census and rolls taken of native Cherokees to match a name from the roll to your family tree.

Beware scams that try to sell you “kits” or “packets” to help you document your heritage. Note that most Native American Grants will require you are fully native. Learn more about Federal Assistance in the United States.
