We have a 40 year old deck that has become unsafe.  We have asked a local carpenter to repair it for us and he is barely charging for his labor to repair it for us.  He is only charging $2,000 for it and we don't have that kind of money to pay for it.  I am 76 years old on Social Security and my husband, a veteran is 70 years old and could not do the construction because of his health.  I am under medical treatment for severe arthritic back pain.  How can we apply for a grant for the $2,000 to repair our deck?  One of the grant applications asked about our income: our combined social security a month is $2,272 - annual income $27,264.  Our medical expense so far in 2017 for my husband's surgery is $11,189.00.  The grant agency came back and said we are ineligible because we make too much money.  Hello?  Who were they talking about?  Is there a grant for VA senior who needs home repair in NC? We need help.  Please tell us how we can get help.  Thank you.

It certainly can be frustrating. Have you checked with the VA to see if they can recommend a source for a loan or grant?  If you haven't had any luck with them you might also try this article about veterans grants.

I have also rercently heard of a great program offered by Habitat for Humanity. It's called Repair Corps Service and they provide critical home repairs for Veterans. Sounds like you could be a perfect candidate! And thank you for your service.
